Academic literacy: a Portuguese perspective
Current analysis deals with
modes of literate constituency of undergraduate students in an academic environment. Study has
been undertaken in Portugal in 2006. Data for analysis hailed from half-structured interviews
with students in a Language and Literature graduation course at the University of Minho,
Portugal. Samples of responses by four students were selected for specific discussions and with
the proposed objective of this study, or rather, to analyze the way students constitute themselves
as literate subjects in the academic environment. Literacy theory as social practice guided the
discussions and analyses of results from the interviews. Approaches related to academic literacy
are crucial for the understanding of the literate practices in this social context. According to the
students-subjects, experiences prior to their admission in the undergraduate course, and mainly,
the different types of interaction in the academic milieu interfere in the skilled use of language
and in their teachers’ training. Interviews revealed the constant tensions between their role as
students and as future teachers which indicates a conflictive literate constituency in language
learning in the above-mentioned course.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes/UFSC
Literacy and interlocutive actions within summary's construction in the academic context
The specialized language, contained in summaries of academic and journalistic
domains, is better understood by students at University when the literacy orientation is
supported by the dialogic language perspective. Consequently, this article aims at analyzing
how literacy events, in which summary is considered as object of teaching-learning, have
effects on the writing production of this discursive genre in the first year of Unifebe’s Letras
Course (Brusque-SC). A longitudinal follow-up students’academic literacy construction, in
the course of 2005, has been performed. The writing production of one student indicates that
teacher’s literacy orientations, within summaries’ comprehension and analyses, don’t
determine that she produces summaries completely right to the genre. The reasons are social
situated, whether in the classroom setting, whether in the relation with distant talks in the
space and time of this student and with others social identities of this literacy person.
Nevertheless, and above all, these orientations help to increase the academic-professional
identity in a more critical direction.

Estimating stellar rotation from starspot detection during planetary transits
A new method for determining the stellar rotation period is proposed here,
based on the detection of starspots during transits of an extra-solar planet
orbiting its host star. As the planet eclipses the star, it may pass in front
of a starspot which will then make itself known through small flux variations
in the transit light curve. If we are lucky enough to catch the same spot on
two consecutive transits, it is possible to estimate the stellar rotational
period. This method is successfully tested on transit simulations on the Sun
yielding the correct value for the solar period. By detecting two starspots on
more than one transit of HD 209458 observed by the Hubble Space Telescope, it
was possible to estimate a period of either 9.9 or 11.4 days for the star,
depending on which spot is responsible for the signature in the light curve a
few transits later. Comparison with period estimates of HD209458 reported in
the literature indicates that 11.4 days is the most likely stellar rotation
period.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

Presentation skills for engineers: systematic interventions in a project-based learning course
This article seeks to reflect on effective presentation skills for
engineering students and the effect of specific interventions on the
quality of presentation skills. Most authors, who discuss
transferable competencies for engineers, refer to different types of
communication skills in general to oral and written
communication skills. Although there is a broad recognition on
the necessity of developing transferable skills in engineering
education, there is no general agreement on what these they
should be. Therefore, presentation skills are studied in the context
of a project-based learning experience at the Industrial
Management and Engineering (IME) programme of the University
of Minho. Six groups of seven first year students of the first
semester of the IME integrated Master´s degree programme
carried out a semester-long project from September 2010 till
January 2011. Three project oral presentations were conducted,
preceded by three interventions focused on specific aspects of oral
presentations. The teachers and the educational researchers
involved in the project coordination team commented on the
presentations and a qualitative analysis of the comments was
carried out. The organisation of the interventions revealed to be
well adapted to the developments that student went through in the
project.(undefined
Academic genres and literacy practices in a course of textile engineering
The main goal of this text is to present preliminary
data from a wider research project on academic
literacies which is being developed at the University of Minho, Portugal. For this first year of research, the focus is on genres that specialise reading and writing practices in the second year Course of Textile Engineering.
The current research builds on the assumption that a university course is a social and cultural context that implies specific social practices (Gee, 1999, 2001) where genres have a determinant role and play specific functions as ‘mediators’ (Bazermann & Prior, 2005).
What genres are to be used to acquire and to
produce knowledge? How do students cope with genres generalities and specificities? are some of the questions that guide this phase of the research.
The adoption of a socio-cultural approach to literacy and genres (Lea & Street, 2006) justifies the ethnographic methodology of the research which involves, until now: document gathering (lists of texts for reading; curricular forms; instructional materials; students’ written works) and field notes; classroom observations;
semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with students and teachers.
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
